What a great virtual assistant should own in the first 30 days
July 31, 2026 · 5 min read
Most VA engagements fail in the first month, and it is almost never the assistant's fault. It is the absence of a handover plan.
Week one is observation and access: inbox rules, calendar patterns, tool logins, and a shared doc where every recurring task gets written down as the founder does it.
Week two, the assistant takes the inbox and calendar with daily handover notes. Week three adds research, data entry and client follow-up. Week four, the assistant writes the SOPs themselves — if they can document it, they own it.
By day 30 the test is simple: can the founder disappear for two days without anything leaking? If yes, the ramp worked. If no, the gap is in the SOPs, not the person.
